Hawaiian Shoyu Chicken

Hawaiian shoyu chicken is a dish that I grew up on a lot in Hawai’i. I don’t remember exactly when I first had this dish, but I at least remember I first had it there. It’s packed with flavors – especially ginger. I don’t necessarily like ginger. I’m more of a garlic girl. However, with this dish, I don’t mind the ginger at all.



While I don’t remember where I had it, Hawaiian shoyu chicken is very popular in restaurants in Hawai’i. It’s also made with super simple ingredients that can be found in almost any home! I think chicken thighs are usually used for this recipe, but since I had a small mix of chicken left, I decided to make this dish!



Hawaiian shoyu chicken is best served with rice or Hawaiian Mac Salad. Heck, why not both! After you get yourself a plate of chicken and whether you decide to eat it with rice or macaroni salad, take some spoonfulls of that liquid and drip it all over the chicken and rice for an even bigger burst of flavor!



Tips To Cook Hawaiian Shoyu Chicken


I don’t usually marinate the chicken before making this Hawaiian Shoyu chicken. Since I let it cook in a pot over low heat, all those flavors fuse into the chicken. I do use salt and pepper on both sides before.


I use Tamari for Hawaiian Shoyu Chicken. Tamari is gluten free soy sauce. If you don’t want to use gluten free soy sauce you don’t need to! Feel free to use regular soy sauce! Just adjust the total accordingly since Tamari does not have as much sodium as regular soy sauce.



Hawaiian BBQ Chicken – This is another great chicken recipe that I had in Hawai’i. You can cook this on a skillet or on the grill! Super simple and quick to prepare! Also with common ingredients found in the pantry!


Kalua Pork – This recipe only calls for 5 ingredients! This is also made with common ingredients. Quick to cook since it is made in an Instant Pot. Full of flavor and enjoyed with rice and or macaroni salad as well!

  • 1 lb Chicken Thigh
  • 2 tsp Oil
  • 2 tsp Garlic
  • 1 tbsp Ginger
  • 1/2 cup Tamari
  • 2 tbsp Vinegar
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 1 pinch Pepper


  • In a bowl, add Tamari (or soy sauce), vinegar, sugar, and water. Mix well and set aside.
  • Salt and pepper both sides of the chicken.
  • In a pot, add oil.
  • Once the oil is hot, add the chicken into the pot.
  • Once all the chicken is in the pot, add the marinade, garlic, and ginger. Carefully mix them together.
  • Bring to a boil. Once it comes to a boil, lower the heat and cook on low until the chicken is tender.
  • Serve hot with rice and/or macaroni salad.
