Filipino Air Fried Chicken Anyone?

Did someone say Filipino air fried chicken? I did! What do you think of when you hear the words Filipino fried chicken? For me, I think of the amazing establishment of Jollibee. Their chicken is so crispy, juicy, and so enjoyable! If you haven’t heard of Jollibee, they are a Filipino fast food chain. They serve delicious food like their widely sensational chicken and Filipino spaghetti. If you’ve never been, I highly recommend seeing if there is an establishment close to you and going!

Filipino Air Fried Chicken

Now, back to me. This is my version of Filipino Fried Chicken. It’s Filipino air fried chicken! I’ll be honest, it isn’t close to being as amazing as Jollibee, but it definitely is tasty. This chicken is marinated and then air fried instead of deep fried for a healthier version. I’ll be working on a deep fried version of this recipe as well, but that’s for another time.

My Filipino air fried chicken is marinated in an aromatic marinade of lemon and spices. Plan ahead, because the chicken should be marinating for at least an hour before cooking. I usually try to leave the chicken for at least two hours, but no longer than four hours because of the citrus in the marinade.

Filipino Air Fried Chicken

Since this is an air fryer recipe, the chicken won’t come out looking like a nice deep fried chicken you would get from Jollibee or other places that sell deep fried chicken. So if that’s what you’re expecting from this recipe, my bad. I’ll have a deep fried version coming soon, so keep an eye out for that!

Tips For Cooking Filipino Air Fried Chicken

I specifically use drum sticks for this recipe. However, if you want to use different cuts of chicken, please feel free to do so.

My air fryer is a little on the smaller side, so if you have a small air fryer like me, make sure not to overcrowd the air fryer. I usually fry in batches of 3 to 4 drum sticks.

Chicken Adobo – This is considered the unofficial national dish of the Philippines. If I could recommend one thing, try this recipe!

Chicken Asado – This is another popular dish that has a tomato base. Only this time, the protein is chicken. Chicken Asado uses potatoes and cooked until tender. Perfect with a nice bowl of steamed rice.

Filipino Picadillo – Another comforting dish. This one is made of beef and delicious with or without a bowl of rice!

Filipino Spaghetti – One of my personal favorites. Spoiler alert, the sauce is a little on the sweeter side. Definitely a delicious meal to have.

Ingredients

Marinade

  • 1/4 Cup Lemon Juice
  • 1 Cup Soy Sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon Garlic
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Bread Crumbs
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1 Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
  • 1 Teaspoon Red Chili Powder

Instructions

The Marinade

  • In a large bowl, add chicken.
  • Add lemon juice and soy sauce.
  • Add garlic, ground black pepper, and salt.
  • Mix well. Massage marinade into the chicken.
  • Cover and marinate for at least 1 hour.
    If time allows, marinate up to 4 hours.

Breading

  • In a separate bowl, add bread crumbs.
  • Add salt, ground black pepper, and red chili powder.
  • Mix well and set aside.

Prepping the Chicken

  • Remove chicken from the marinade and lightly pat dry with a paper towel.
  • Dip chicken into the breading one at a time. Make sure that the chicken is covered.
  • On a clean plate, set dipped chicken aside.

Cooking the Chicken

  • Add 3 to 4 pieces of chicken to the air fryer.
  • Cook at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes.
  • Remove and cook the next batch.
  • Serve hot and eat alone or with rice.
